Product Description

Precise temperature measurements are paramount, especially when using pyrometers. However, industrial settings present unique challenges that can affect temperature accuracy. Optris recommends short-wavelength or mid-range pyrometers for their resilience against emissivity variation and superior optical resolution, ensuring consistent performance in real-world conditions. Engineers must carefully consider factors like wavelength selection, calibration accuracy, optics quality, and temperature range to mitigate potential errors from optical limitations, emissivity changes, reflections, and misalignment.

Enter the Optris CSmicro 2M pyrometer, purposefully designed to measure temperatures ranging from 250 °C to 1600 °C. With its specialized spectral range of 1.6 µm, this pyrometer excels in accurately measuring metal temperatures. Its compact infrared measuring head facilitates easy installation in tight spaces, enabling cost-effective mechanical integration. This thermal non-contact sensor finds frequent use in hot metal applications such as steel, tungsten, iron, nickel, and semiconductors.

Boasting an impressive distance-to-spot size ratio of up to 75:1, the CSmicro 2M ensures precise temperature measurements even from a distance. Its compact size and temperature resistance of up to 125 °C make the infrared sensor ideal for machinery integration, particularly in manufacturing environments. With a rapid response time of just 8 ms, CSmicro 2M sensors deliver swift and accurate temperature readings.

The CSmicro 2M series offers versatility with various versions featuring different optics, distance-to-spot size ratios, maximal head temperatures, and output types. The infrared pyrometer supports analog outputs like 4-20 mA, 0-5 V, or 0-10 V voltage output, digital alarms, and serial communication over RS232, facilitating seamless integration into control systems. Additionally, CSmicro series with mA output supports two-wire output operation to cater to diverse measurement requirements.

Engineered to withstand harsh conditions, the CSmicro 2M pyrometer ensures accurate temperature measurements in demanding environments. Its thermal shock-resistant design guarantees consistency despite ambient temperature fluctuations. The robust stainless steel measuring head with an M12x1 thread simplifies integration into confined spaces, expanding its applicability across various industries. An intelligent LED display offers versatile functionality, including alarm signaling and self-diagnosis, while electronic components within the cable enhance the measuring head’s resistance to high temperatures. Optional USB kits and software simplify configuration and enable temperature recording over time, while additional accessories like air purging enhance the pyrometers capabilities. These pyrometers are designed and manufactured in Germany, carefully calibrated to government standards such as PTB or NIST. For large-quantity OEM customers, customization options, such as different cable sizes, are available. As with all Optris products, application engineers are on hand to discuss industrial applications and provide after-sales support.

Software

The Optris CompactConnect software improves the functionalities of Optris fixed infrared pyrometers, offering various monitoring, analysis, and control features beyond basic temperature measurement. It includes features like visualizing temperature trends with temperature-time diagrams and documentation. The software enables data logging, automatic process controls, parameterization of the pyrometer via configuration settings, and setting up programmable outputs and inputs. Additionally, it provides advanced signal-processing functionalities. Compact Connect The Optris IR mobile allows users to set up and commission an Optris infrared pyrometer or infrared camera with an Android smartphone or tablet. This tool becomes handy for commissioning and aligning the infrared cameras field of view or adjusting the configuration. The app analyzes the connected infrared cameras live infrared image stream with auto hot and cold spot detection. For pyrometers, a temperature-time diagram or the video signal is displayed. This app works on most Android devices running 5.0+ with a USB port supporting USB-OTG (On The Go). Google Play

FAQs

How can I change the scaling, emissivity, or other settings?

The Optris CS kit (ACCSMIAC) and the software CompactConnect must be used to change the pyrometers settings.

Can I set up the CSmicro 2M pyrometer for digital communication?

The optional USB programming kit is required for digital communication. Using the terminal block, connect each wire of the USB adapter cable with the same colored wire of the sensor cable. The sensor offers bidirectional and unidirectional digital communication. Bidirectional communication allows for the sending and receiving of data between the sensor and a computer. Unidirectional communication supports a fast burst mode of data in which the sensor only sends data.

Does the CSmicro 2M support an RS232 communication?

Yes, for a bidirectional RS232 connection of the sensor, an additional interface board (recommended MAX3381E) is needed. MAX3381E

Does the CSmicro 2M support an open collector output?

Yes, an additional open collector output is supported. The open collector output is an additional alarm output on the CSmicro 2M. In addition, the simultaneous analog output is an open collector output and can trigger an external relay, for example. In the case of long wires, there might be a voltage drop at the ground wire, and the mV output is distorted. The brown wire can be used as a ground supply, and the thermocouple wire can be used as a ground.

Can I connect the CSmicro 2M to a smartphone to adjust the settings?

The CSmicro 2M sensor can connect directly to an Android smartphone or tablet. The IR mobile application monitors and analyses infrared temperature measurements on a connected Android smartphone or tablet. The phone powers the CSmicro 2M pyrometer.

When can I use the CSmicro 2M after powering?

The CSmicro 2M has a warm-up time. At a supply voltage (Vcc) ≥ 12 V, the sensor takes about 5 minutes to work in a stable mode. Therefore, the LED will show an alarm state for up to 5 minutes after switching on the unit.

How far can I position the CSmicro 2M from the target?

The measuring object’s size and the infrared thermometers optical resolution determine the maximum distance between the sensing head and the measuring object. The object should fill out the optics’ field of view to prevent measuring deviations. Consequently, the spot should always be at least the same size as the object or smaller. The spot size refers to 90% of the radiation energy.

Which changes have to be selected if a close-focus lens is used?

The optional CF lens allows the measurement of small objects. If the CF lens is used, the transmission has to be set to 0.87. The optional USB kit (including software) must change this value. The assigned transmission (average value) is a characteristic value that may have a certain scattering. If required, the transmission has to be determined experimentally.

What is the function of the green LED at the end of the sensor?

The green LED can be programmed for the following functions: alarming, aiming support, self-diagnostic, and temperature Code indication. The USB adapter cable and software are necessary for the configuration. The factory default setting for the LED is self-diagnostic.

What LED at the end of the sensor is always on?

In the self-diagnostic mode, if the LED is always on or always on with short breaks, the sensor indicates that it is unstable due to ambient temperature changes or is in an error mode.

What kind of power supply is required?

Use a separate, stabilized power supply with an output voltage of 5-30 V DC. The power supply’s residual ripple should be a maximum of 200 mV. Use shielded cables only for all power and data lines.

Do I need to ground the shielding of the CSmicro?

The shield (black) on the CSmicro is not connected to GND (brown). Connecting the shield to the ground or GND (whichever works best) is necessary. Please review the manual to review the drawings.

What is / shall be the output impedance for the CSmicro with mA and mV output?

The CSmicro’s output impedance with an mV output must be ≥ 10 kΩ. The maximum loop impedance for the CSmicro with an mA output is 1000 Ω.

Can you connect two pyrometers to the same computer?

Yes, this is possible. For using the software CompactPlusConnect or CompactConnect (depends on which type of pyrometers you are using) you have to create different instances of the software. You can connect two pyrometers via the USB ports. It is also possible to connect the two pyrometers with a RS485 interface. You can connect the first pyrometer via the provided RS485-USB adapter to the PC.
