DIRTH: Development of a Novel Transportable System for Dynamic Infrared Thermographic Imaging in Surgery

The project focuses on developing a portable, lightweight infrared thermography system for operating rooms. Infrared thermography measures electromagnetic radiation emitted by warm objects, converting it into graphical images where intensities correlate with body temperatures. This non-invasive, contactless method is useful for medical applications such as detecting circulatory disorders, joint inflammation, tumors, and assessing tissue blood flow. Current thermal imaging cameras, while diverse, are not optimized for surgical environments due to limitations in capturing small areas with high pixel density, detecting minimal temperature differences, and ensuring system compatibility with the OR (size, mobility, usability).

Additionally, current software only provides basic image analysis tools. The DIRTH system aims to enhance image interpretation through advanced software algorithms for both static and dynamic thermography. The goal is a compact, easily transportable device for seamless use in multiple ORs. Final evaluations will be conducted with clinical partners in surgical settings, focusing on applications in plastic surgery.
