IDEEL: Implementation of Laser Drying Processes for Economical & Ecological Lithium Ion Battery Production

The IDEEL project explores laser drying processes for more economical and eco-friendly lithium-ion battery production. Funded by Germany’s federal “Battery 2020 Transfer” program, IDEEL aims to replace conventional convection drying, which is energy-intensive and space-demanding, with a laser-based approach. This innovative process promises significant reductions in energy and space requirements, enhanced by inline sensor systems for continuous temperature monitoring and minimized production waste.

Conventional convection ovens lead to high heat losses and limited process control, resulting in rejects due to undetected inhomogeneities. IDEEL’s focus on upscaling laser drying from lab to industry level includes research into material responses to rapid energy input and process simulations. This approach is expected to lower CO2 emissions and production costs, making electric vehicles more affordable and boosting European competitiveness in battery production
