Xi 1M ETH Xi 1M ETH Xi 1M ETH Xi 1M ETH Xi 1M ETH Xi 1M ETH Xi 1M ETH Xi 1M ETH Xi 1M ETH Xi 1M ETH Xi 1M ETH Xi 1M ETH Xi 1M ETH

The Optris Xi 1M is a tough, short-wavelength fixed-mount thermal camera. It measures the temperature of hot, low-emissivity materials without contact. The camera works within a spectral range of 0.85 to 1.1 µm. This helps reduce measurement errors caused by reflections and changes in emissivity, which often happen in high-temperature settings.

The Xi 1M from the Xi series measures temperatures from 450 to 1800 °C without needing to switch ranges. Its CMOS detector offers 396 × 300 pixels with a 15 µm pixel pitch. The thermal camera captures full-frame images at 20 Hz and can line scan at speeds up to 500 Hz. In this mode, it can profile the temperature of moving targets like metal strips or rotating parts using 396 × 8 pixels over Ethernet or 396 × 1 pixels in smart operation.

The Xi 1M has a motorized focus to ensure clear images at various working distances. Its stainless steel housing, rated IP67, protects the lens and electronics in tough industrial conditions. The infrared camera includes Ethernet, USB 2.0, and RS-485 interfaces. It also supports Power-over-Ethernet and runs on an 8–30 V DC supply, making it easy to integrate into existing systems.

For automation tasks, the Xi 1M offers one analog output and one isolated input. If needed, optional process interface modules can add up to three analog or alarm outputs each, or connect to industrial fieldbus communication. Up to three stackable interfaces can combine for a total of nine independent analog or relay outputs with built-in fail-safe monitoring.

Thanks to its ability to operate independently, the thermal camera can handle internal temperature processing and hotspot detection without needing a computer. The thermal imager sends output directly as analog, digital, or alarm signals.

Product Description

The Optris Xi 1M is a short-wavelength infrared camera designed for non-contact thermal imaging of complex industrial materials. Operating within the 0.85 to 1.1 μm spectral range, the device captures precise surface temperature data for materials such as steel, iron, brass, copper, tin, carbon, ceramics, and semiconductors. The Optris Xi 1M meets the requirements of demanding industrial applications by providing broad temperature measurement ranges, high accuracy, and configurable field-of-view options.

Non-reflective materials typically exhibit high and stable emissivity across long-wave infrared spectral ranges, regardless of surface texture. In contrast, metallic and reflective materials display low emissivity at long infrared wavelengths, which leads to inconsistent and unreliable temperature measurements.

The short-wavelength spectral range of the Xi 1M infrared camera aligns with the peak emissivity of most metallic materials, enabling accurate remote temperature measurement. According to Planck’s radiation law, short wavelengths result in greater infrared radiation emission, which reduces the impact of emissivity variations on measurement repeatability. Consequently, short-wavelength infrared cameras are preferred for contactless temperature measurement of reflective materials at elevated temperatures. The Xi 1M also features autonomous thermal hot spot detection, increasing its effectiveness in monitoring and inspection tasks. Manufactured in Germany, the Xi 1M demonstrates superior precision, accuracy, and repeatability compared to long-wavelength infrared cameras in industrial applications.

The Xi 1M thermal camera provides mid-resolution thermal imaging at 396 by 300 pixels, supporting temperature measurements from 450°C to 1800°C without the need for sub-ranges. Its high distance-to-spot-size ratio enables accurate temperature data collection from significant distances, exceeding the optical performance of contemporary pyrometers. The motorized focus function allows for precise remote adjustment of the focal point on measurement targets.

The industrial-grade construction of the Optris Xi 1M ensures reliable operation in challenging industrial settings. Its compact, durable, and waterproof design supports both fixed and mounted installations, providing consistent performance in various manufacturing environments.

The Optris Xi 1M uses Ethernet as its primary interface, supporting a 20 Hz frame rate for full-size images. A USB interface is available for sub-images of 132 by 100 pixels at the same frame rate. Autonomous operation reduces the need for extensive software development, facilitating integration into control systems. Additional features include automatic spot detection, direct analog output (0/4-20mA), and compatibility with industrial fieldbus protocols such as Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP, RS485, and Profinet. The autonomous mode at 20 Hz for sub-images further streamlines integration into industrial machinery.

In addition, the Optris Xi1M offers access to more complex software functionalities, such as line scanning or image merging through the PIX Connect software license. PIX Connect is indispensable. FAQs

Can I trust the temperature measurement of a single pixel?

Due to the diffraction-limited nature of infrared optics, the optical resolution and image quality are physically limited. As the dimensions of the individual pixels are in the same range as the infrared wavelength, users shall ensure that the target is larger than the camera’s MFOV.

What is the speed of the Xi 1M thermal camera in autonomous operation?

20 Hz, 500 Hz in line scanning operation

How do I configure the IP addresses for the Xi 1M thermal cameras?

Use the PIXConnect software to configure Ethernet settings and the autonomous mode.

Does the thermal camera support DHCP in the Ethernet mode?

No, the thermal camera must be assigned to a static IP address.

Do I need software to run the infrared camera?

No, the infrared camera can operate independently of a computer. However, for setup and configuration, the software PIXConnect is necessary.

Can I use the Xi1M with metals?

Yes. The Xi1M thermal camera is especially designed and optimized for hot metal objects.

How do I focus the camera?

The motorized focus can be set with the PIXConnect software. In the PIXConnect software, click on the “distance” button in the toolbar and use the slider.

Where is the Xi 1M thermal camera made, and does it contain memory components sourced from outside the U.S. or the European Union?

The Xi 1M is designed, manufactured, and calibrated in Berlin, Germany. Some electronic components may be sourced from outside the EU or the US. Still, it is important to note that the Xi 1M does not store any thermal images or temperature values in non-volatile memory. The Xi 1M thermal camera only stores full thermal images, thermal video (.ravi files), and temperature values in the customer PC hosting the PIX Connect software necessary to operate the camera. The thermal camera uses memory components inside the thermal camera electronics, which may be sourced outside the EU or the US to store a reference picture (also called dark picture) of the non-uniformity correction paddle or flag and some reference temperatures used to correct temperature drift. All these memory elements are deleted when the power to the camera head is terminated.

Can the Xi 1M thermal camera operate without a connection to a computer?

The Xi 1M thermal camera can calculate the temperature autonomously without a computer. The temperature data can either be transmitted via the USB or Ethernet interface or output via the process interface. Fieldbus communication is also available.

Can the Xi 1M thermal camera send temperature information from spots or areas to my PLC?

The Xi 1M thermal camera can send temperature information or temperature alarms from the Process Interface connection on the back of the camera. A cable with integrated electronics and a terminal block is included with the camera. It can be programmed in PIX Connect software as an Analog Input (AI) and Digital Input (DI) to control the thermal camera or as an Analog Output (AO) to control the process. The signal level is always 0-10 V (DI = 24 V). An optional industrial process interface is also available, delivering up to three independent temperature values or alarms to a user-supplied PLC. USB-RS485 adapters are available for applications with output requirements for more than three areas.

Is the infrared camera long-wave (LWIR), mid-wave (MWIR), or short-wave (SWIR)?

Optris infrared cameras are available in multiple spectral ranges, with model-specific frame rates and interface options. The Xi 1M uses SWIR and uses Ethernet.

Which industrial Ethernet/protocol kits are available for Xi 1M?

The following digital interface kits are available: Ethernet TCP/IP / Modbus TCP interface kit, EtherNet/IP interface kit, PROFINET kit.

What is the IFOV (instantaneous field of view/pixel size) for a given camera and lens?

The IFOV for each camera and optic is provided by the optics calculator in the Optris IR Camera Calculator.

What is the bit depth of the camera data?

The camera temperature data is based on 14-bit information. The data stream is transported in a 16-bit format, with 14 bits used for temperature data and 2 bits unused.

Is raw ADU data provided for processing in third-party software?

Raw data is not disclosed. ADU values can be output as a matrix via the OTC SDK, but they are uninterpreted. Temperature information and color information can be sent to third-party software for further processing.

What does the offset value represent in the analog output setup for Xi 1M with PIF module (PIX Connect → Device (PIF) → AO1 → Setup)?

The offset entry is not a manual setting. It is a display field that shows the result of the offset/gain calculation derived from the configured temperature range and the corresponding signal output range.

After connecting an Xi 1M to PIX Connect via Ethernet, why can a “frame timeout” occur even though the IP address is correct and ping responds?

In Windows, camera access permissions can prevent image acquisition even when network connectivity is correct. In the Windows settings search, “camera” should be opened, and the option “allow apps to access your camera” should be enabled.

For steelmaking processes, should long-wave, near-infrared, or short-wave infrared models be selected?

For steelmaking processes, short-wave (lower wavelength) models are recommended. Suitable models include PI1M, PI08M, PI05M, Xi1M, and Xi05M. The lowest feasible wavelength / spectral range is recommended.

Which infrared camera is best suited for measuring welding temperatures?

Camera selection depends on the welding process and the required temperature range. For plastic welding, an LWIR PI/Xi LT camera can be used.
For metal welding (e.g., steel applications), short-wavelength models (PI1M, PI08M, PI05M, Xi1M, Xi05M) should be used. For laser welding, models with an appropriate blocking filter are available.
