The Optris CT P3 pyrometer is built for precise temperature measurement of thin plastic films. It operates in a spectral range of 3.43 µm, ensuring accuracy between 50 °C and 400 °C (122 °F and 752 °F). While plastics thicker than 0.4 mm and pigmented films can be easily measured in the long-wavelength IR spectral range, very thin plastic films are transparent in this range. As a result, thin foil plastics need special narrow-band sensitive IR sensors that match the material-specific absorption bands in the IR spectrum for accurate temperature measurement.

The IR thermometer responds quickly, with a response time of 100 ms, and can handle ambient temperatures up to 75 °C (167 °F). Its electronics box provides various outputs, and optional accessories improve its functionality for industrial use.

The Optris CT P3 pyrometer is engineered with precision to accurately measure the temperature of thin plastic films. The pyrometers specialized spectral range of 3.43 µm ensures precise measurements within a broad temperature range, spanning from 50 °C to 400 °C.

Emissivity is a crucial factor in non-contact temperature measurement and must be considered based on various factors, including material properties and wavelength. Plastics thicker than 0.4 mm and pigmented films can be easily measured in the long-wavelength IR spectral range (8-14 μm) with emissivity of ≥ 0.9. However, very thin plastic films are transparent in this range, necessitating temperature measurement through material-specific absorption bands in the IR spectrum via narrow-band sensitive IR sensors. Materials like Polyethylene (PE), Polypropylene (PP), Cellophane, Polystyrene (PS), Polymethylmethacrylate or Acrylic (PMMA), Polycarbonate (PC), Polyester (PET), and Polyvinyl chloride (PVC or Vinyl) exhibit IR opaqueness at 3.43 μm, while polyester, polyurethane, Teflon, FEP, and polyamide exhibit this property at 7.9 μm.

The CT P3 infrared thermometer, with its extremely narrow-band spectral range of 3.43 μm, is ideal for measuring the temperature of very thin plastic materials. The infrared sensors temperature range spans from 50 °C to 400 °C, and it offers a rapid response time of 100 ms. The sensing head can withstand temperatures of up to 75 °C without requiring additional cooling. The separate electronics box is equipped with easily accessible programming buttons and a backlit LCD display.

The Optris CompactConnect software improves the functionalities of Optris fixed infrared pyrometers, offering various monitoring, analysis, and control features beyond basic temperature measurement. It includes features like visualizing temperature trends with temperature-time diagrams and documentation. The software enables data logging, automatic process controls, parameterization of the pyrometer via configuration settings, and setting up programmable outputs and inputs. Additionally, it provides advanced signal-processing functionalities. Compact Connect The Optris IR mobile allows users to set up and commission an Optris infrared pyrometer or infrared camera with an Android smartphone or tablet. This tool becomes handy for commissioning and aligning the infrared cameras field of view or adjusting the configuration. The app analyzes the connected infrared cameras live infrared image stream with auto hot and cold spot detection. For pyrometers, a temperature-time diagram or the video signal is displayed. Can I shorten the cable between the sensor head and the electronics box?

On the model CT P3, the sensing head cable can be shortened by max. 3 m

What distance-to-spot size ratio is correct for the application?

The measuring object’s size and the infrared thermometers optical resolution determine the maximum distance between the sensing head and the measuring object. To prevent measuring errors, the object should fill out the optics field of view. Consequently, the spot should always be at least the same size as the object or should be smaller than that.

How can I improve the noise amplitude of the sensor?

In the CT models, the head cable must not be moved during the measurement. Use shielded cables only. The sensor shield has to be grounded. Avoid ground loops and related signal interferences in industrial environments. It might be necessary to interrupt the ground connections inside the electronics box. To do this, switch the jumper inside the electronics box to another position. Review the manual.

How do I exchange the sensor head?

From the factory side, the sensing head has already been connected to the electronics and the calibration code has been entered. Any exchange of sensing heads and electronics is possible inside a certain model group. Every head has a specific calibration code, which is printed on the head cable. This calibration code must be stored in the electronic box for correct temperature measurement and sensor functionality.

Can I use the CT P3 as a 2-wire sensor?

Please do not connect a supply voltage to the analog outputs, as this will destroy the output. The CT P3 is not a 2-wire sensor. Please review the CSmicro series, as this is a two-wire sensor.

Can you connect two pyrometers to the same computer?

Yes, this is possible. For using the software CompactPlusConnect or CompactConnect (depends on which type of pyrometers you are using) you have to create different instances of the software. You can connect two pyrometers via the USB ports. It is also possible to connect the two pyrometers with a RS485 interface. You can connect the first pyrometer via the provided RS485-USB adapter to the PC.
