Non-contact temperature measurement on glass - what device to choose?

As described in detail in our Glass brochure, reflection and transmittance are serious considerations.

Depending on whether one is measuring the surface temperature of the glass, or the temperature within the glass itself, specific infrared thermometers or thermal imaging cameras are recommended by Optris.

Glass Inspection Systems

With the new Glass inspection system from Optris, there is a new approach to temperature measurement in the production of low-e glass. Low emissivity glass poses a major challenge for infrared devices which are traditionally measuring the glass temperature from above when the panes moved out of the furnace during production.

Bottom Up Glass Inspecion System

The new Bottom Up Glass inspection system solves this problem by having two infrared imagers installed underneath the tempering line which measure the temperature on the non-coated high emissivity side of the glass.

The combination of two VGA imagers with a maximum field of view of 111° results in an excellent 1600 pixels scan line resolution on maximum 4,3 m (14.11 ft) scan width.

An ultra-fast CTlaser 4M pyrometer with 90 µs exposure time combined with the digitally controlled lens protection system (DCLP) is a reliable safeguard for both infrared cameras in case of glass breakage.

The optris PI 640i G7 infrared cameras are the first industry-specific thermal imaging cameras in the PI series. Designed specially for the glass industry, this camera measures in only one spectral range.

The typical parameters of Optris cameras – high measurement speed (80 Hz), high optical resolution (640 x 480 pixels) and compact design – were kept to allow for the capturing of real-time thermal images of everything from glass beads right up to large panes.

The IR camera is used as a line-scan camera in the field of sheet glass production and offers various possibilities for documenting and controlling the process.

Connect sets benchmarks within the thermography branch by offering its
users extensive recording and real-time analysis options. In addition,
moving measuring objects can be monitored via line scan function.

A real-time data transfer to external software programms, including
radiometric video sequences and snap shots, text files for the analysis
in Excel as well as files containing color information for standard
programs such as Adobe Photoshop or the Windows Media Player, is
supported by the software PIX connect.

The modern software with its intuitive user interface enables the data display of multiple sensors in different windows. Additionally, the temperature information can easily be saved in Excel or MS Word for further actions.
